Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

MTD for ITSA support for accountants, one quarter at a time

We chase your MTD clients for their records, categorise them in your practice's MTD software and flag what is missing, so each quarterly update reaches your reviewer ready to check and submit.

Quarterly calendar

MTD quarterly update deadlines for 2026 to 2027

Every MTD client now has five touchpoints a year in place of one: four quarterly updates and the tax return. This is the calendar we work to for each of them.

Updates are cumulative: each one covers the tax year to date, so a correction can be picked up in a later update. Clients who elect calendar update periods use quarter ends of 30 June, 30 September, 31 December and 31 March, with the same deadlines.

HMRC has said it will not apply penalty points for late quarterly updates in the 2026 to 2027 tax year. After that, each late update earns a point and a £200 penalty applies at 4 points.

Who is in scope

MTD for Income Tax thresholds by year

HMRC checks each client's qualifying income from the self assessment return two years earlier. That makes the returns your team files this January the list of who joins in April 2027.

Qualifying income is gross self-employment turnover plus gross property income, before expenses. Employment income, dividends, pensions and an individual partner's share of partnership profit do not count towards it.

When we prepare 2025 to 2026 return data for your clients, we can mark everyone whose combined turnover and rents come out above £30,000 so your team can confirm the cohort and plan sign-ups early.

Inside a quarter

What we do for each MTD client

The work follows the same order every quarter, so your reviewer always knows where a client stands.

We work inside the MTD software your practice and client already use, including QuickBooks and IRIS, through logins you issue.

  1. Request the quarter's records

Bank statements or feeds, sales and rental income, receipts and invoices, sent with a dated request and a follow-up schedule.

  2. Categorise income and expenses

Transactions posted to the right business or property income source and expense category in your MTD software, following your practice's coding rules.

  3. Flag gaps and queries

Missing statements, unexplained receipts, possible private use and anything that looks like a capital item go on a query list for your reviewer instead of being guessed.

  4. Hand over for review

A short status note per client: complete, complete with queries, or still waiting on the client, with the date of the last chase.

  5. Log the submission

Once your team has submitted, we record it on your tracker and set the next quarter's request date.

Questions

MTD for Income Tax questions from practices

When are MTD quarterly updates due?

On 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May. Each update covers the tax year to date, ending 5 July, 5 October, 5 January and 5 April for standard periods, or the calendar quarter ends if the client has elected for them. The tax return for the year is still due by 31 January after the tax year ends.

Who has to join MTD for Income Tax in April 2027?

Sole traders and landlords whose qualifying income was over £30,000 on their 2025 to 2026 self assessment return. Qualifying income is gross self-employment and property income added together, before expenses. The threshold then falls to £20,000 from 6 April 2028, tested on the 2026 to 2027 return.

Can a virtual assistant submit MTD quarterly updates?

We do not submit. We chase records, categorise them in your MTD software and flag queries, then hand the update to your team. Your practice reviews it and submits under its own agent credentials, so HMRC sees your firm as the agent and your reviewer approves every figure.

How much extra work does MTD for ITSA create for a practice?

Each client in scope moves from one annual deadline to five: four quarterly updates and the tax return. Most of the added hours go on chasing records and categorising transactions four times a year. That is the part we take on, which leaves your qualified staff with the review.

Is there a penalty for a late MTD quarterly update?

HMRC has said it will not apply penalty points for late quarterly updates in the 2026 to 2027 tax year. From then on, each late update earns a penalty point, and a £200 penalty is charged when a client reaches 4 points. If a penalty is charged, our appeals service can draft the appeal.

What if a client's records change after an update is sent?

Quarterly updates are cumulative, so each one covers the tax year from 6 April to the end of the latest period. A correction made in the records is carried into the next update, and HMRC's guidance says earlier updates do not need to be resent. We note any correction on the client's query list so your reviewer sees it.
